This was especially beneficial to frequent visitors from U.S. This allowed travelers to save time and money when planning their Mexico trip. At the time it was established, the Free Zone did not require travel permits (FMMs) for visitors, or Temporary Vehicle Import Permits (TIPs) for non-Mexican plated vehicles. The Mexico Free Zone was established to bolster trade and tourism in the country's border areas. The 'Free zone' designation is short for 'Hassle-Free Zone,' but the area has many other names including Border Zone, Perimeter Zone, Liberated Zone, the Free Trade Zone, and 'Zona Libre' in Spanish. However, some of the more popular tourist destinations lie within what's known as the Mexico Free Zone, or Mexico Free Border Zone - an area of the country that does not require a vehicle permit. In addition, MEPs have approved plans to give the EU Border and Coast Guard Agency a standing corps of 10,000 border guards by 2027 to boost Europe's security. For a day trip, an overnighter, or even a longer stay - visitors to certain areas of Mexico must obtain a Temporary Vehicle Importation Permit (TIP) to drive their non-Mexican vehicles across the border. These controls could start as early as 2022. Travellers who don't need a visa will in the future be screened before they arrive in the EU using the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (Etias) in order to detect criminals, terrorists or anyone else posing a risk before they arrive in the EU. The ISF was also approved by Parliament in July 2021 with a budget of €1.9 billion. The fund will work closely with the new Internal Security Fund (ISF), focusing on tackling cross-border threats, such as terrorism, organised crime and cybercrime. The funds should also serve to push member states to share the responsibility of hosting refugees and asylum-seekers more fairly. The new fund should contribute to strengthening the common asylum policy, develop legal migration, in line with member state needs, support the integration of third-country nationals, and contribute to the fight against irregular migration. In a resolution adopted in July 2021, Parliament approved the renewed Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) budget for 2021-2027, which will increase to €9.88 billion. This includes for example the creation of instruments and agencies such as the Schengen Information System, the Visa Information System, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), or a new entry and exit registration system at the Schengen zone's external borders. These challenges have triggered considerable developments in border management policy. Although this figure dropped to 125,100 in 2020, the EU tries to strengthen its external border controls and to deal more efficiently with asylum applications. Up to 1.83 million illegal crossings were detected at the EU's external borders in 2015. Managing migration and the security of its external borders is a challenge for Europe.
